AOI FOR THE WIRE & CABLE INDUSTRY: A PROMISING REVOLUTION

Over the course of the past 2 years, Pioneer has been developing their own Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) system for cable printers and length marking machines. The lack of an AOI system, forces us to visually inspect the outcome of these two machines.

When the cable is running at a high speed in extrusion lines, it becomes impossible to grasp the content on the surface through simple visual inspection. So usually there are two common methods carried out to deal with these situations.

Visual inspection after production:

Traditionally, the final product is examined only after the manufacturing process is completed. This means that any possible flaw on the surface of the cable cannot be detected right away by the operator or inspector, thus causing unexpected waste of material and resources.

Stroboscope:

The stroboscope, by means of brief and rapid emission of light beams, creates a visual effect that allows us to observe the cable as a stationary item.
This system is commonly used for inspection of the printed text in high speed lines. But as a downside, staring at the text under the stroboscope for long periods of time may incur in ocular pain.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AOI?

The introduction of an AOI system can bring a huge positive impact to your production line since this system not only solves the problem of either visual inspection or using a stroboscope but also improves the inspection quality and efficiency.
Below we list down some significant features of our AOI:
Feature 1

sharp decrease of inspection time

The AOI system is equipped with a high-speed camera which brings the inspection time down to 0.2 second. Due to this decrease of inspection time, flaws can be detected earlier, thus preventing us from creating unnecessary waste.

feature 2

highly improve the efficiency

Without an AOI system, a residual inspector must be assigned and allocated to the side of the machine. In contrast, machines equipped with an AOI can be monitored by the human-machine interface so that the inspector can monitor multiple lines at once

Feature 3

artificial INTELLIGENCE in the AOI system

Thanks to machine learning and artificial intelligence technology, AOI can not only "see" but also "read". AOI can easily and accurately recognize both letters and numbers even when they are presented in different colors and fonts, which makes AOI a flexible solution under variable situations.

CONNECTING AOI WITH SmartFA

The AOI system is able to connect with Pioneer SmartFA in an organic and effective manner. Product history can be tracked by inspecting the images and the predicting lengths from the AOI.
Moreover with the event logging system, time stamps could also be shown on it. Therefore, the operator can neatly identify those segments of cable presenting flaws at a simple glance.

expectation in the future

AOI has been already established in a variety of industrial fields. But we strongly believe that for the Wire & Cable industry, AOI still has an enormous potential to be explored.
Besides the text recognition feature for cable printers and surface flaws detection feature, Pioneer continuously strives to create new applications of AOI, expecting that this technology can bring numerous possibilities for the Wire & Cable industry.
